Vitamins and Omega-3s Linked to Sharper Brains

The study looked at 104 adults, average age 87, participating in the Oregon Brain Aging Study who underwent blood testing and cognitive assessment; 42 participants also had MRI scans.

The use of blood levels of nutrients rather than relying on food-frequency questionnaires was important, noted an accompanying editorial.  While eating a balance diet is important to obtain sufficient vitamins and omega-3s, UC Berkeley’s Wellness Guide to Dietary Supplements suggests the use of multivitamin (and fish oil) supplementation is worth considering if you are in one of these groups:

4. On a weight-loss diet

5. Do not eat a balanced diet (at least 9 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, as well as whole grains, low-fat dairy, and small servings of lean meat, poultry, or fish).
