Spotlight: Supplements – Why the Hype?

We Americans do love our dietary supplements. By 2010, more than half of the adult population felt a need to take one and in 2011 spent $40 billion on them, according to Business Week. This is an industry that is not slowing down!

Dietary supplements range in type from common vitamins to rare minerals, all of which are supposed to enhance our health or life. With over 90% of Americans not meeting their recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables, the popularity of multivitamins has skyrocketed as a convenient means to increase nutrient intake in hopes of improving life quality.

In fact, research shows that the primary motivators for taking supplements are to lose weight, stay healthy, gain an edge in sports or in the bedroom, and avoid using prescription drugs.

In short, dietary supplements offer the promise and convenience needed to fulfill a desire to stay healthy and active from a variety of perspectives, but what really are they?
